How to calculate a percentage

Percentage formulas
- Percentage of a number: percentage ÷ 100 × number. For example, 20% of 150 is 30.
- What percent one number is of another: part ÷ whole × 100. For example, 30 is 20% of 150.
- Percentage change: (ending value − starting value) ÷ the absolute starting value × 100. A positive value change is an increase; a negative value change is a decrease. Percentage change from zero is undefined.
Where percentages are useful
Percentages help compare proportions and changes—for example, checking what share of a total an amount represents or how much a value changed. For discounts, tax, marks or finance, confirm which values the calculation should use and check any applicable rules.
