How BMI is calculated
Enter weight in kilograms and height in centimeters. The calculator converts height to meters and uses BMI = weight ÷ height². For example, a weight of 70 kg and height of 1.7 m gives a BMI of about 24.2.
Standard adult BMI ranges
- Below 18.5: below the standard adult range.
- 18.5 to less than 25: within the standard adult range.
- 25 to less than 30: above the standard adult range.
- 30 and above: adult obesity range.
Important limitations
BMI is a general screening measure, not a diagnosis or a direct measurement of body fat or health. These adult ranges are not intended for children or teens, and BMI may not describe an individual's health accurately in every circumstance, including pregnancy or for some athletes. For personal health questions, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
